| History: One of two 18 month colts. Once they were six months old they were weaned from their mothers and shut in a concrete yard as the breeder did not have enough fields to separate them from the mares, they were still fed high protein feed but with no room to burn it off and no handling or training they became very wild. Eventually the breeder called the vet to shoot them but the vet could not get close enough, he suggested to the owner that they contact us. On arrival they were totally unhandled and had no muscle at all. The first time out in a field they were almost agoraphobic, eventually they learnt to run around and play, a better diet and lots of patience and time and both became very loving ponies. Dixie unfortunately does suffer from Sweet itch. And both ponies will never be suitable for children as even now loud noises or quick movements cause them to jump and shy. Currently rehomed as a companion to two mares and settled well. 07.07.07 - returned to sanctuary for diet and excercise program, will return to loan home asap. 30.08.07 - finally starting to lose weight, sweetitch well under control |
