A letter from Yoshi's Carer

A letter received from a carer;

From Yoshi's Carer

    Hi Syra,

    Thought it was time for an update.
    Yoshi is well and happy, and has lost nearly all the fat off his bottom and neck. He looks fab!

    I have had to buy him a bigger muzzle as the pony size one was beginning to rub his face. Can you believe he is wearing cob size?!?! At least with it being bigger I have been able to pad it out properly so he has thick foam padding, covered in fleece, all round the bucket bit and it is much more comfortable for him. He is still coming in during the day as I feel he needs a break from wearing the muzzle and a chance to do a bit of biting if he feels the need!

    However, biting is not much on his agenda these days and he is beginning to show us another side to his character. Just the other day there was a lovely 'first' for me. I had to go in to the shelter to fetch something and he was lying down. For the first time ever, he didn't get up; I sat on the bed next to him and he got a neck rub. What a little star he is.

Be Watchful

Hay being stolen.

Not only horse tack and farm machinery are being targeted by thieves. Horsewatch have noted that bales of hay are being stolen now. The police have suggested marking your hay with different coloured baler twine or string. Rather too large a job for yards like ours with up to a hundred horses, but might be an idea if you just keep one or two horses.

Hi, took Missie to show on Saturday, she was very good once she settled down we entered 2 in hand classes, best kept horse or pony that lives out she was 3^rd and best mare she was 5^th . We went for the experience and I was really pleased with her. Had a bit of a struggle getting her back in the trailer but we got there eventually.

Best wishes

A letter from Frosty's Carer

A letter received from a carer;

From Frosty's Carer - a particularly poignant letter for us as Frosty was in a very poor condition when she arrived with us and took eighteen months before she was ready for rehoming - great to hear she's doing well, a real success story!

Hi Syra!

I just thought I'd drop you an e-mail to let you know how Frosty is doing.

On Sunday, we went for our first trip off the yard since I got her. We went to a fun ride at the Port Elliot estate - a big country park nearby. She was an absolute star - didn't put a foot wrong!

A letter received from a carer;

From Shara's Carer

Hi,
Just thought I'd give you an update on how Shara is getting on ... She is adorable.

She was just perfect at the Pony Club Rally - I was a bit worried when I saw how big the field was the rally was taking place in - but she didn't put a foot wrong.

We recently took two of our ponies, Annabel and Dipsybell to a nearby primary school at Rydon. The children there enjoyed seeing two such well behaved ponies and wrote us the following thank you;

Thank you for coming to our school fete and for bringing the ponies. The ponies looked very cute and the children enjoyed seeing them.

We hope to see you next year!

From Misty3's Carer

Hi Syra

Just to let you know that Misty travelled very well and was very chirpy
when she got off the lorry! She has met the boys over the fence and is
completely unimpresed! Lots of squealing and tried to bite Oliver's
nose which he was surprised about as he thinks he is the most handsome
boy in the world! Giz is keeping his distance at the moment and
watching her. He always likes to think about things for a bit before
committing himself and she has a very different personality from Milly.
She was fine to catch this morning which was lovely and she seems to
have settled in fine. She certainly has a voice and said hello to all
the other ponies that passed our gate this morning!

Please could you let all the girls know who came to say goodbye to her
especially Carrie. I will send you some photos of her next week so you
can see what she is up to!

Kind regards
Misty3's Carer

Letter from Tess and Autumn's Carer

From Tess and Autumn's Carer

Thanks Syra,

I knew that insurance would be down to us, just wondered if you had a
pet broker or company. NFU quoted me £600 each today! Won't be paying
that . . . I think I'll probably just take out a liability insurance in
case they boot a car door or child as we wander round the village with
them. It's the health aspect that bumps the premiums up so I guess we'll
just look after them well and risk the vet's fees if we get unlucky.

South Manor and spring

Our new Retirement home for horses is being developed steadily. The bad winter slowed up much of the work outside especially with all the springs coming through the fields, each needing draining to make the ground firm enough for elderly horses.

The stable block is looking very good though with the stables nearly finished, all the block work done but the two Simons who do all the maintenance of our farms are often called away to do other jobs. This winter has been hard on old buildings and water pipes. We had to move out and stay elsewhere when the boiler broke down and after several nights of going to bed with hot water bottles and dressing gowns left on. It was deemed sensible (at our great age) to find alternative accommodation.

Bowen Therapy at the Sanctuary

Angela Ricards writes a few words about some of the treatment we use alongside traditional modern veterinary care;

The Mare and Foal Sanctuary and me!

In 2007, I was fortunate enough to be allowed to use some of the residents of The Mare and Foal Sanctuary as case study subjects in my studies for Equine Bowen Therapy – a gentle, hands-on treatment working over muscles and soft tissue (not bone) which offers pain relief and balance to the body.
