From December 2009, Coombe Park is closed to all visitors due to an infectious equine disease. We apologise for this but feel it is important to limit exposure and risk of cross-infection. If intending to visit, please ring 01803 866615 before leaving for up to the minute information.
Update, Spring 2009
The Sanctuary is still based at Honeysuckle Farm, but we've expanded our care of horses and moved into a second farm 20 minutes away called Coombe Park Equestrian Centre, which is famous amongst the local horse people as it has a large indoor arena and held many memorable events. We think this is much more suited for people visiting as it's purpose built for public events so we opened our doors there on April 2009 for the first time. Our Adoption Ponies are there (but do check to make sure if you're coming specially to see one!) as well as some of those we're hoping to rehome. We're also holding more of our own events there, including some exciting new ones, as well as continuing rental of the Arena to local groups where possible.
Please note: If you're interested in rehoming one of our horses, please fill out a questionnaire and make an appointment first as otherwise we cannot guarantee the horse will be ready for viewing when you arrive.
Honeysuckle Farm will continue to be the base of the Sanctuary and is more suitable for those horses which need the most care and training to recover from their lives before they came to us, and to prepare them for rehoming in the future.
Less abled access
There's disabled parking in front of the arena. It is on a slope so if you have difficulties exiting your vehicle please alert a member of staff or ring us and we can direct you to a more level area.
Most public areas on the site are accessible to wheelchairs but the main car park and some of the field lanes have loose surfaces which may make pushing a wheelchair difficult.
Please read the following rules;
- No dogs allowed except for guide dogs.
- All children must be supervised closely - not every horse is safe with inquisitive
fingers. This also applies to adults and be careful walking around behind
horses, they can kick with no warning.
- NO SMOKING! on any of our property.
- Feeding the horses. They are all on specialist diets and since some of
the horses are under severe medication any additional food may be harmful, please don't offer any food without first asking a member of staff whether it is ok.
- Please don't litter. Not because it means we have to pick it up, but a crisp packet can kill a horse if it gets caught in its windpipe or digestive system. Devon is beautiful, keep it that way.
- Do not touch the horses unless a member of staff indicates it is safe to
do so. Some of our horses have behavioural problems, some are wild - you won't
know which so please err on the side of caution.
Please enjoy your time in the stables and ask a member of staff if you wish
to know anything!
