HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL ESPECIALLY OUR SUPPORTERS WHO HELP TO KEEP OUR CHARITY ALIVE.
Christmas and the New year has arrived with lots of worries. Three welfare cases needing immediate attention already.
One very urgent case involves eleven Shetland ponies and they will be arriving this coming week. This is closely followed by three Arabian horses, or rather two and half as one of them isn't born yet. Yes, another in foal mare with a yearling foal at foot and one getting ready to show its face into this big wide world. He or she will be one of the lucky ones, they start from here and will be protected for the rest of their life. No grubby markets, no neglectful owner, no cruel owner or owner without any idea of how to care for a horse.
It is quite nice that the newcomer will have another foal to grow up with as we are also expectig a foal from Queenie, the mare in foal rescued from market. It always makes me smile to see a very high born horse and a common old hill pony playing together. New birth is such a leveller. The mares won't care, just imagine the beautiful and elegant Arabian foal dancing round his/her's companion. The very intelligent hill pony foal will be quite a match and although smaller will be able to keep up with the racey Arab. Faster neater turns with a clever little wild pony brain.
So. what a start to the year, 14 new equines in before January is half way through the month. This will bring the total number of horses in the sanctuary up to 60 again. Just when Syra had worked so hard on getting the others out on loan. We had 60 in last year and she got the figures down to 46, with eight ready to go out now. So a massive 22 new homes produced, not easy with our exacting requirements.
The last welfare case hopefully will not have to come in, just a dear little old pony that hasn't had her feet trimmed for ages. Russ has been out to see her
and as a farrier himself has said that they 50 per cent too long. How sad, the owner doesn't even think anything is wrong. Just think about those displaced bones in the lower leg and feet as the pony is forced to walk back on her heels.
What is worse, is that the owner admits that the pony had laminitis in the Spring and no vet attended. Perhaps the owner will get gout one day and get some idea of the acute pain that this pony suffered.
Look out for pictures of the new ponies.
