Mare and Foal Sanctuary nominated for Animal Charity Team of the Year

On the 20 January 2023, we were delighted to receive the news that the Mare and Foal Sanctuary has been nominated for the Petplan and Association of Cats and Dogs Homes (ADCH) Animal Charity Team of the Year award. An incredible achievement for all our staff and volunteers.

The Animal Charity Awards has been running for 11 years. It’s an opportunity to celebrate teams and individuals in the charity sector who go the extra mile to rescue and rehome animals in need.

An awards ceremony will be scheduled later this year to announce the winners. The independent panel of judges will be searching for a winner who demonstrates:

  • exceptional levels of care and compassion
  • outstanding knowledge, expertise, and communication
  • going above and beyond in their duties to improve animal welfare

Sally Burton, our Head of Sanctuary Care, said: “We’re so pleased to be nominated. The Charity Awards are a fantastic way to recognise the hard work put in by our staff and volunteers. Receiving this nomination is a huge accomplishment. The judging categories align with our values here at the Mare and Foal Sanctuary. It’s great to see that our principles are shining through in the work we do.”

Despite the challenges currently being faced nationally by charities, The Mare and Foal continue to offer life-changing care to horses and ponies in need. We provide no-shame, expert advice to horse owners whatever their circumstances. Their aim is to always keep an equine with its owner whenever it is safe and practical to do so. Sally continued: “We’re entering a tricky time for the charity sector. Receiving this nomination is a boost for our team. Of course, we couldn’t carry on the work we do without our generous supporters, so being nominated for the Animal Charity Awards is also a chance to thank them for helping us to continue making a difference.”

The lifechanging work carried out by the sanctuary is more important than ever. In December 2022 specialist staff at the Mare and Foal Sanctuary had ongoing welfare cases involving 300 equines.

A recent rescue involved Riley. Riley is a thoroughbred who was severely underweight and living in unsuitable conditions when the sanctuary was first called out to help. She was too weak to travel. To avoid a long journey, Riley was moved quickly to a nearby RSPCA holding centre. Here she was treated by a vet for cellulitis (a deep infection under the skin), colic symptoms and given a course of antibiotics. A few weeks later Riley was able to travel to the sanctuary where she has received the expert care she needed.
