Sarah and Chai’s story
Sarah from East Devon is a Sanctuary at Home carer to 19-year-old Piebald Gypsy Vanner Chai.
‘After losing my own beloved pony eight years ago, I knew I wanted to do things differently,’ Sarah says. ‘I wanted to help a charity and my friend told me about The Mare and Foal Sanctuary. From the first moment of contacting them, everyone was helpful, friendly and supportive. The whole process was very professional but great fun. I explained what I was looking for and they came up with two possibilities. Of course I had to meet them both.
‘It’s funny how your heart chooses for you. As soon as I saw Chai I knew she was the one. I went to meet her, groom and ride her a few times to make sure everyone was happy. It took a while for Chai to settle and for us to get to know each other, but it was worth it. It was the best decision I’ve ever made, and I can’t imagine Chai not being here with me.
‘Chai has a special friend called ‘Christmas Pudding’. Chai’s always been quite reserved when it comes to making friends, as if she was protecting herself. But since Pudding arrived, Chai has turned into a cuddly, friendly and outgoing soul. Chai loves attention and her favourite ride is to our local pub where she lets everybody come up to say hello. I also take Chai to the residential care home where I work. She just stands there loving all the fuss.
‘I’ll never regret contacting The Mare and Foal Sanctuary. So many amazing equines need homes, so the least we can do when looking for a new best equine friend is to become a Sanctuary at Home carer.’
We would like to say a big thank you to Sarah. Without carers like her, we wouldn’t be able to take in more horses in need. If you, or someone you know, is interested in becoming a Sanctuary at Home carer, please visit www.mareandfoal.org or call 01626 355 969.
