Reflecting on Horses Inside Out

The Mare and Foal Sanctuary is dedicated to sharing best practice in equine care and welfare and we would like to thank Gillian Higgins for bringing her incredible Horses Inside Out lecture demonstration to our Coombe Park Equestrian and Education Centre.

The demonstration featured a unique learning experience where the bones and muscles of the horse were carefully painted onto the coats of our rescue ponies Pringle and Tammy, using animal safe paint. Pringle and Tammy then completed a range of tasks to show how their bones and muscles interact to create movement. Horse Care Team Leader, Chelsea, also took part in the event by demonstrating the bones used by horse and rider.

Pringle and Tammy came to the sanctuary when their owners could no longer keep them. Pringle is an equine partner in our Equine Assisted Services team and helps teach children, young people and adults in our community.

Gillian is a British Horse Society Senior Coach, professional sports and remedial therapist and author. She’s also a horse lover who’s passionate about sharing her knowledge of anatomy and physiology with the equestrian world.

The event was a huge success with 86 supporters attending ranging from vets and farriers to riders and horse owners. Attendees were also able to meet with our Welfare Outreach and Advice team to get information to support their own equines.

Comments on social media showcase the positive response to the event. One attendee said, ‘great to attend such an informative and inspiring evening, all for the good of the horse. Thank you. The ponies being the stars of the show.’

PR and Campaigns Manager, Pippa Quelch, recently met with Gillian to talk more about Horses Inside Out and reflect on the event.

Gillian has an online academy where you can access exclusive webinars, lectures and tutorials. The Horses Inside Out Academy provides free on-demand learning opportunities and exercises which can be performed with your own horse. Gillian also offers online massage courses to help keep the horses you care for feeling their best. Find out more here.

We are excited to be inviting Gillian back to the Sanctuary in 2025. For more information on our upcoming events please visit our events page.
